HM (Hidden Machine) Locations & Recommended HM Pokémon Guide


This is a comprehensive summary of essential HM (Hidden Machine) information for story progression and field exploration in Generation 4 Pokémon, especially Platinum (PT) and Diamond/Pearl (DP) versions.
It includes each HM’s location, badge requirements, and recommended HM carrier Pokémon, all based on practical gameplay.

HM (Hidden Machine) List & Acquisition Locations

Rock Smash -> 1. Cut -> 5. Defog -> 2. Fly
-> 3. Surf -> 4. Strength -> 8. Rock Climb -> 7. Waterfall
This is the order in which they can be obtained.

※ Some HMs require you to have the corresponding Gym Badge to use them in the field.


Recommended HM Carrier Pokémon (HM Slaves)

Bibarel
Can cover most HMs such as Surf, Waterfall, Cut, Rock Smash, Strength, and Rock Climb.
Catch a Bidoof on Routes 201–205 or at Lake Verity and evolve it.

Tropius
Specialized in covering Grass/Flying-type HMs like Cut, Fly, Strength, Rock Smash, Defog, and Flash.
Appears on Route 14 and other locations after obtaining the National Pokédex.

Golduck
Covers Water-type HMs such as Surf, Strength, Waterfall, and Rock Climb.
Can be caught on Route 210, Lake Acuity, and similar locations.

Tip: With just Bibarel + Tropius, you can cover almost all HMs with two Pokémon.
If you want to maximize your party’s move variety, it’s efficient to use dedicated HM Pokémon.


HM Usage & Management Tips

HMs can be used on multiple Pokémon and are not consumed after use.

HM moves can generally only be forgotten with the Move Deleter.

The Move Deleter is found in the house below the Pokémon Center in Canalave City.

Some HMs are required for story progression, so it’s convenient to teach them to your HM Pokémon as soon as you get them.

Differences Between Platinum (Pt) and DP Versions

Some HM locations differ:

Defog (HM05) is obtained at the Great Marsh in DP, and at the Solaceon Ruins in Pt.

Pokédex and Map:

Pt version increases the Sinnoh Pokédex to 210 Pokémon, and some map structures and events are changed, affecting HM usage and frequency.

Knowing each HM’s location and usage requirements in advance will help your story progression go smoothly.

Actively use HM carrier Pokémon like Bibarel and Tropius to expand your party’s move coverage.
