Pokémon Black & White Episode 2 – Striaton City & The First Gym Badge

1. Entering Route 2 & Getting the Running Shoes

  • Entering Route 2, receiving a call and Running Shoes from Mom

As you step into Route 2, you’ll receive a call from Mom—and she shows up to give you the Running Shoes!

From now on, you can run by pressing the B button (or Z/X), making travel much faster.

2. Farming & Battle with Bianca

  • Farming along the route, meeting and battling Bianca

Certain areas are still inaccessible without the Cut (HM) move.

Bianca shows up and challenges you to a battle—it's early game, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to win.

3. Arriving in Striaton City & Trainer School

  • Arriving in Striaton City
  • Gym Leader absent, visiting the Trainer School

The Gym Leader is missing, so head over to the Trainer School next to the Pokémon Center.

There, you’ll meet Cheren again and immediately jump into another battle.

4. Battle with Cheren & Farming

  • Battle with Cheren, prepare for more training

The battle with Cheren is manageable. While waiting for the Gym Leader to return, take time to farm and strengthen your team.

5. Dreamyard & Getting a Pansear

  • Exploring the Dreamyard, receiving a Pansear

Head to the Dreamyard next to the Gym. After battling a trainer, a nearby NPC gives you a Pokémon.

The given Pokémon depends on your starter:

  • If you chose Oshawott (Water), you get Pansear (Fire type)
  • If you chose Tepig (Fire), you get Panpour (Water type)
  • If you chose Snivy (Grass), you get Pansage (Grass type)

Pansear as a Fire type is very helpful in beating the first Gym.

6. Striaton City Gym Challenge

  • Inside the Gym, battles against two Gym Trainers

The Gym design is unique—it features a Gym Leader who uses the type that is strong against your starter Pokémon. The Gym Trainers mainly use Normal-type Pokémon, so you should be able to handle them easily.

7. Battle with Gym Leader Cilan

  • Battle with Gym Leader Cilan

If your starter is Oshawott (Water), your opponent will be Cilan, the Grass-type Gym Leader.

Cilan’s Pokémon:

  • Lillipup (Lv. 12)
  • Pansage (Lv. 14, Grass type)

Use Pansear (Fire type) to quickly take down Pansage and turn the tide of battle in your favor.

8. Winning the Trio Badge & Getting TM

  • Receive the Trio Badge & TM Work Up

Defeat the Gym Leader to earn the Trio Badge and receive TM83 Work Up as a reward.

Now you're ready to proceed to the next area!

Walkthrough Tips

  • Running Shoes: Mom personally delivers them on Route 2.
  • Dreamyard Pansear: The Pokémon you receive depends on your starter. Plan your team balance accordingly.
  • Striaton City Gym: The Gym Leader will counter your starter’s weakness. Use Pansear or other secondary Pokémon wisely to gain an advantage.
