Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver Walkthrough – Episode 5: Ecruteak City and the Fourth Gym Badge!

Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver Walkthrough – Episode 5: Ecruteak City and the Fourth Gym Badge!

Last time, everyone arrived in Ecruteak City, right?
Now let’s continue with the walkthrough and aim for the fourth badge!

Arrival in Ecruteak City & Meeting Bill

When you enter the Pokémon Center in Ecruteak City, you’ll meet a young researcher named Bill.
He’s the creator of the Pokémon Storage System. If you meet certain conditions later, he’ll gift you an Eevee!
Eevee can evolve into Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, or Umbreon depending on friendship and conditions.

You’ll also receive the Dowsing Machine here.
In the HG/SS version, it appears directly on the screen and can be a bit inconvenient, but it’s essential for finding hidden items.

Exploring the Burned Tower

Head over to the Burned Tower within the city.
It plays a key role in the storyline, especially the legendary Pokémon event.
Inside, you’ll spot Ecruteak City’s Gym Leader, Morty.
And of course, your Rival appears again for another battle!

This Rival battle is a great way to earn experience points.
Take advantage of type matchups to secure an easy win.

Encountering the Legendary Trio

Here, you’ll witness your first encounter with the three Legendary Beasts — Suicune, Entei, and Raikou!
You can’t catch them yet, but they’ll later appear in the wild as roaming Pokémon.

Ecruteak City Gym Challenge

Inside the Gym, the path is dark and full of invisible platforms and hidden trainers. It’s both a test of navigation and a good chance for training.
Battle: You vs. Gym Leader Morty!
Morty specializes in Ghost-type Pokémon.
Remember: Ghost types are weak to Ghost and Dark-type moves.
Use Pokémon with Dark-type attacks like Bite or Pursuit, or Normal-types that are immune to Ghost attacks.
After steady training, victory shouldn’t be too hard - especially if you’ve kept your team well-leveled.

Fourth Badge – Fog Badge Get!

Obtaining the HM03 Surf

With the fourth badge, you can now use HM03 Surf outside of battle!
This allows water travel and access to many new areas and hidden locations.

You’ll also receive the powerful TM Shadow Ball - a reliable special move for Ghost-type Pokémon.

Dance Theater & Surf Event

Before heading to the next city, you’ll need to obtain Surf from the Dance Theater.
Leave the Gym and visit the Ecruteak Dance Theater.
Team Rocket makes an appearance here as well - time to teach them another lesson!
You’ll also meet an important female NPC tied to the story, though she’s not who she first seems.
Finally, you receive HM03 Surf!

Thanks to your fourth badge, you can use Surf immediately.
It’s a strong move in battle and expands your exploration possibilities dramatically.

Moving On to Olivine City

All done in Ecruteak City!
Head north along the route ahead.

Along the way, you’ll meet the Safari Zone Warden.
The Safari Zone will open later, allowing you to enjoy various Pokémon capture events.

Keep moving north and you’ll arrive in Olivine City!
Stay tuned for the next walkthrough - the Olivine City episode!
